Peas Pulao with Curry Leaves and Restaurant Style Paneer Butter Masala

Today I'm sharing a simple rice dish which is known as Peas Pulao, but with a twist. Never thought about it, but when I saw this recipe in my favorite Indian cookbook, I had to try this. Last week, I invited my girlfriends for lunch and for them I made this dish with few other side dishes, like Chana Masala, Paneer butter Masala, Bhindi Do-pyaza. Surprisingly, this peas pulao went very well with all of them. Everyone liked the rice.
Peas Pulao is a North Indian rice dish, where basmati rice is cooked with Green peas, but in this recipe, there is a touch of South Indian flavour, as here the rice is tempered with curry leaves and few other whole spices, which take this dish in whole new level. It's simple but very flavourful rice dish.

Ingredients :
Basmati Rice : 1 1/2 cup
Frozen/fresh Peas : 1 cup
Curry leaves : 6-8
Mustard Seeds : 1/2 tsp.
Onion seed/kalonji/kala jeera : 1/2 tsp.
Fenugreek seed : 1/2 tsp.
Garlic : 1 tsp.(chopped/crushed)
Ginger : 1 tsp.(finely chopped)
Salt : about 1 tsp.(adjustable)
Oil : 1 tblsp.
Water : double the amount of rice

Method :
  • Wash the rice well, and leave it soak in little water for 30 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a heavy bottomed pan, add the curry leaves, mustard, onion and fenugreek seeds, ginger, garlic and salt and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes.
  • Drain the rice and add it to the pan and stir gently. Add the frozen or fresh peas and water and bring to boil. Lower the heat and cover the pan with a lid.
  • Cook for about 15-20 minutes or rice is done. Remove from heat and keep it covered for another 10 minutes. When ready to serve, fluff up the rice and serve on the plate.
I served this rice with Paneer butter Masala, and I tried the recipe from Mansi's Restaurant style Paneer Butter Masala and I've to tell you, it came out excellent. Try her recipe, you'll be amazed. I followed her recipe fully, so I'm not writing it here again, go to her space and check out please.
