Asian Sweet n Sour Chicken


   Among the all Chinese Chicken side dishes Sweet n Sour Chicken is one of the popular, people often take out or order at Asian restaurants. But it is quite easy to make at home, too. Actually, I was also quite skeptical of trying it at home like other Chinese dishes. Something about these Chinese dishes I feel very intimidating and I feel I can't recreate the restaurant flavour at home. But Somehow recently I thought to shaken off my fear of making Asian dishes at home as my family loves Chinese and me too. And its always healthier to make it at home rather than buying from restaurants.
  Crispy fried chicken, chunks of onions and bell pepper and few not-so-sour pineapple chunks together create a magic and the combo can never go wrong in this lip-smacking Asian dish which goes well with fried rice or even with plain white rice. Withouit much Ado, let's check out the recipe.............

You need :
Chicken breast : 500 gm, cut into 1" cube
Green/Red Bell pepper(capsicum) : 1, cut into 1" square pieces
Onion : 1, cut into cube like pieces
Ginger-garlic paste : 2 tblsp.
Garlic : 2 fat cloves, minced
Ginger : 1", minced
Pineapple : 1 cup
Cornstarch : 1/2 cup
Eggs : 2, beaten
White oil for deep frying the chicken pieces
Oil : 1 tblsp. (for cooking the gravy)
Rice Vinegar : 1/3 cup
Soy Sauce : 1 tblsp.
Tomato sauce/Ketchup : 1/3 cup
Brown sugar : 2 tblsp.
White pepper/black pepper to taste
Sesame seeds : 1 tblsp.
Green onions : for garnishing, optional

How To :
  • You can cut the chicken pieces in cube like pieces or you can cut in thin long stripes, as you wish. I love to cut them in not-so-thick cube pieces. Marinate these chicken pieces in ginger-garlic paste, beaten egg and soy sauce for at least 1/2 an hour.
  • Heat enough oil in a deep frying pan, add  cornflour in the marinated chicken, mix well, shaken off extra cornflour and carefully pour them into hot oil. Do not overcrowd the pan and in medium heat fry the chicken pieces till they are done. Remove from oil and place on a paper towel. 
  • When all the chicken pieces are done frying, add 1 tblsp. oil in another pan, add cut onions and bell peppers, saute for couple of minutes, then add finely chopped ginger and garlic, add rice vinegar, sugar, ketchup and pineapple chunks. Add fried chicken pieces in the pan, mix well everything. Add little water if you like the gravy a little thinner like me.
  • Season with little white/black pepper, finally add some sesame seeds for crunch from top and finish off cooking. 
  • Garnish with more sesame seeds and green onions.
