Jeera Aloo from Sanjeev kapoor

Jeera Aloo is one of the simplest Indian vegetarian dish, where jeera stands for cumin seeds and aloo stands for potatoes. So, basically it's an irresistible but simple potato dish flavoured with cumin seeds. Potatoes are one of the most consumable Indian vegetable of all. In my household, everybody loves potatoes, so I make this jeera aloo whenever I have less time to cook as it is a very quick-fix dish. Every time I made this before, I made this only with tempered cumin seed only, but this time I found this Jeera Aloo recipe from Sanjeev Kapoor. This one is shown on his show on Mother's day and it was made by his mom on the show, So it must be an Authentic Punjabi recipe...it came out just awesome..a must try recipe and definitely a keeper...

Ingredients :

Potatoes : 4(large)
Cumin seeds : 1 tsp.
Coriander seeds : 1 tblsp. (Slightly crushed)
Roasted cumin seed powder : 1 tsp. (Dry roast 1 big spoonfull of cumin seeds until it changes colour and grind into powder - you can keep this powder for future use)
Turmeric powder : 1 tsp.
Red chilli powder : 1 tsp.
Salt to taste
Oil : 1 tblsp.
Amchoor powder(Dry mango) : 1/2 tsp.
Fresh coriander seeds for garnishing(optional)

Method :
  • Peel and then cut potatoes in 1 inch cube like pieces. You can also use baby potatoes for this recipe. Boil the potatoes till tender, not overcooked. Keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan, temper with cumin seeds, when it start to splutter and changes colour, add crushed coriander seeds, roasted cumin seed powder, turmeric and red chilli powder. Add little water. Stir and cook the masala for 2 minutes.
  • Add boiled potatoes and in low heat, stir to coat the spices well with potatoes. Season with salt and lastly add dry mango powder. Stir for another 1 minute.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves if you wish. I didn't.
